The high tide on Friday night has passed without causing any significant additional flooding in Christchurch.

Surface flooding is disrupting a small number of traffic routes in affected areas along the Heathcote and Avon rivers.

There have been no reports of any property damage as a result of the surface flooding.

The water supply is largely unaffected, although catchments reliant on stream water are using alternative sources. Bores are able to supply enough quantity in Little River and Akaroa, and water is being taken to Duvauchelle in tankers due to dirty water in Pipers Stream making it unsuitable for treatment.

Pumps will remain in place and operating where required although the water level is receding.

Further checks on stormwater grates will be done on Saturday to make sure they are clear and the network is operating efficiently.

A number of roads that were closed due to flooding reopened on Friday afternoon.

They are:

  • Clarendon Tce,
  • Richardson Tce
  • Aynsley Tce

The following roads are closed due to surface flooding:

  • New Brighton Rd between Anzac Dr and Palmers Rd
  • Rocking Horse Rd between Petrel Lane and Pukeko Place

There is also surface flooding on parts of Rocking Horse Road and New Brighton Road and people are advised to be very careful driving in these areas. Stapletons Road is restricted to residents access.

"While we’ve had some surface flooding on roads, we do not expect any flooding of properties at floor levels," says David Adamson, General Manager City Services.

MetService is forecasting the rain to ease overnight with showers clearing on Saturday, with strong south-westerly winds easing on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Adamson said the new Dudley Creek bypass pipe and upstream storage facilities on the Heathcote River had coped well with the rain.
