Strong communities give people a sense of belonging and encourage them to take part in social, cultural, economic and political life.

Refreshing our strategy on how we work with communities

We’re refreshing our 2007 Strengthening Communities Strategy to guide how we work with organisations, groups and communities across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula for the next 10 years.

The new strategy, which has been renamed the draft Ōtautahi Christchurch Community Strategy 2021-31, reflects our ongoing commitment to work with the many diverse organisations, groups and people in our city to build inclusive, safe and resilient communities.

The draft strategy was considered at the Council’s Sustainability and Community Resilience Committee meeting(external link) on Wednesday 25 August 2021, where it was approved to go out for public consultation.

Public consultation on the draft strategy opens on Friday 10 September 2021 and runs until Monday 25 October 2021. More information and supporting documentation about the draft strategy can be found on Have Your Say(external link) or download the overview document of the draft strategy [PDF, 1 MB].

Strengthening Communities Strategy 2007

Strong communities give people a sense of belonging and encourage them to take part in social, cultural, economic and political life.

This participation and the support that such communities can offer in times of stress, promote the well-being of individuals and families/whanau. This strategy incorporates community group grants review and the community facilities plan.

The Strengthening Communities Strategy 2007 is a framework to guide the Council's work with community organisations, which in turn work in a range of ways to help develop strong communities. A number of processes and disciplines can be used in working with and for communities to enhance their strength. These processes include the provision of community services, community capacity building, community development, community activism and advocacy. All these processes can be legitimate and effective ways of working when used appropriately.
