The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust is a non-profit organisation formed in 2002. They focus on the estuary, particularly:

  • Healthy ecosystems.
  • Communities working together for clean water.
  • Open space and safe recreation.
  • Places we can all enjoy and respect.

Avon Ōtākaro Network(external link)

Since its inception in 2011, Avon Ōtākaro Network has advocated for the former residential red zone to become a city to sea pathway with maximum ecological restoration.

Over the years they have worked with the Council to help implement several corridor-wide initiatives designed to engage more people with the Red Zone for recreation, events, as a transport corridor and with nature.

Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust(external link)

The Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust (BPCT) is a non-profit organisation that works with landowners, agencies, sponsors and the wider community to promote the conservation and enhancement of indigenous biodiversity and sustainable land management on Banks Peninsula.

Canterbury Community Gardens Association(external link)

The Canterbury Community Gardens Association (CCGA) is a support network for over 46 community gardens throughout the Canterbury region. They are part of a thriving global movement for people to grow their own food together.

They support this growing network through events, workshops, forums, social gatherings, promotion, research, and their website.

Christchurch Envirohub fosters collaboration among environmental and sustainability groups, supports impactful projects, and inspires action through education for a greener, more sustainable future in Christchurch.

As a children’s rights issue, the Climate Action Campus aims to support children and young people in their response to the climate crisis.

Conservation Volunteers New Zealand(external link)

Conservation Volunteers New Zealand brings volunteers together to plant and care for native trees, eradicate pests and weeds, protect threatened species, and help make our natural spaces accessible to everyone. 

Eco-Action Trust(external link)

Eco-Action Nursery Trust works with a network of local schools to grow native trees and plants suitable for native bird food and habitat within the Christchurch Red Zone.

They cultivate plants in satellite nurseries managed by schools and community groups. Throughout the year, they run events planting and mulching within the Christchurch Red Zone.

Friends of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens(external link)

Friends of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens create and foster an important link between Christchurch Botanic Gardens and the community, to promote, support and contribute to the ongoing development of the Botanic Gardens.

Mt Vernon Port Hills Park Trust(external link)

Mount Vernon Park was purchased for the people of Canterbury in 1985 after a successful campaign to raise funds. Strong support was received from the individuals, businesses, schools and local authorities.

The aim of buying the park was to preserve the open tussock backdrop to Christchurch and prevent housing creeping up the slopes on this part of the Port Hills.

The 235-hectare park climbs from the city’s urban edge to Summit Road and beyond to a high point of 462 metres overlooking the eroded volcanic landscape of Lyttelton Harbour. It is bounded on the east by the popular Rāpaki Track and on the west by Huntsbury Spur.

Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network(external link)

Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network is a community group committed to working collaboratively to restore the ecological health of the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River and its catchment.

Orton Bradley Park(external link)

Orton Bradley Park is a private 650ha rural property situated on the southern shores of Lyttelton Harbour open 365 days a year.

They are a fantastic family-friendly location, with large open spaces, fantastic sunsets, and park-like settings.

Over 25km of walking tracks cater for all ages and abilities, ranging from the famous Rhododendron Walk (20 minutes) to the popular Waterfall Gully Track (2 1/2 hours) and beyond to the DOC Hut or Mt Herbert.

Ōtamahua/Quail Island Restoration Trust(external link)

Since 1998 dedicated volunteers have worked to restore the native ecology of Ōtamahua/Quail Island. The trust has eradicated most pests, except for mice, from the island and planted thousands of trees as part of an eco-restoration project in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Ngāti Wheke of Rāpaki.

Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust(external link)

Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust has the vision to develop environmental guardians of the future through improved public walking and biking access, enhancing biodiversity, promoting knowledge and working in partnership with others who share our commitment to Banks Peninsula.

Styx Living Laboratory Trust(external link)

The Styx Living Laboratory Trust is a local river care group established in 2002 to develop a 'living laboratory' in Pūharakekenui (Styx) River catchment.

The trust advocates for maintaining water quality and other values, including drainage, ecology, landscape, culture, heritage and recreation in the river.

Summit Road Society(external link)

Summit Road Society aims to enhance, preserve and protect the nature, beauty and open character of the hills of Banks Peninsula for people to enjoy. 

Travis Wetland Trust(external link)

Travis Wetland Trust works with the Christchurch City Council to preserve and develop Travis Wetland as a natural wetland system.

Trees for Canterbury is strongly linked to the local community, providing environmental education, providing native plants, and undertaking plantings with community organisations and schools throughout Canterbury.
