Dyers Pass Road - safety improvements

What

We will be installing 3km of guardrails and widening the shoulder of the road in some places.

Why

To improve safety on Dyers Pass Road. The road has a high crash rate and crashes tend to be serious due to the steep terrain.

Where

Near the top of the hill on Dyers Pass Road.

When

Work will start in December 2020 and is expected to be completed by June 2021.

Contact

The contractor is Higgins Contracting Ltd. Phone 03 341 4370 between Monday and Saturday. Please advise us if you have specific property access requirements e.g. medical visits, home help, large vehicle deliveries, planned works.

What are we doing?

Currently, there are guardrails along about 25 per cent of Dyers Pass Road but the road is narrow causing cars and cyclists to compete for road space. By the end of the project there will be guardrails along almost 70 per cent of the route.

This safety upgrade will create a slightly wider road cross-section and 3km of new guardrails will be installed in high-risk locations, which should reduce the severity of crashes.

Traffic impact

This work will improve the safety of everyone travelling on Dyers Pass Road, however it will cause significant disruption at times.

For the safety of the crews working on the road, we ask that cyclists and drivers using Dyers Pass Road respect the traffic management that will be in place as these safety improvements are carried out.

There is limited space for the crews to work in, so at various times during construction, we will recommend that people travel via Lyttelton Tunnel or Gebbies Pass rather than on Dyers Pass Road.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
