Canterbury Multi-Use Arena - enabling works

What

Following our recent notice regarding Detailed Site Investigations at the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena (CMUA) site, we will soon be starting enabling works (mostly utility relocations) to get the site ready for the main construction works.

Why

The enabling works are designed to clear the site as much as possible prior to the start of the main (permanent) construction works.

Where

At the CMUA site, which is land bordered by Madras, Barbadoes, Hereford and Tuam Streets.

When

Work is scheduled to start on Monday 25 May 2020 and will take approximately six months.

What’s happening on site?

In the coming weeks you’ll notice some further activity happening on the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena site.

From Monday 25 May, the first of several enabling works contracts will start. There are some utilities such as power, fibre networks, water and wastewater that need to be relocated out of the way before the main arena construction begins in the middle of 2021.

As some of the utility services need to be relocated, there will also be some work also occurring in the surrounding streets.

There may also be removal and safe disposal of some contaminants, such as soil contaminated from old fuel tanks, and coal tar from under Cashel and Lichfield Streets, depending on the findings from the detailed site investigation that’s already underway.

This work is in addition to the current work being undertaken by the Crown (the owner of the site), which includes building demolition and site clearance.

How will this impact you?

There should be limited disruptions for neighbouring premises while this work takes place in terms of noise, dust and traffic. However, at times there will be restrictions or temporary closures in the surrounding streets as we install diverted services.

By the end of 2020 we will be permanently closing Cashel and Lichfield Streets between Madras and Barbadoes Streets, as these form part of the Arena site. We will provide updates well before then with more information on this.

Thank you for your patience as we carry out this work and will continue to keep you informed about the    progress of the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena and development of the site.
