High Street - revitalisation

What

We're upgrading High Street and Cashel Street: pipe renewal, road resurfacing, streetscape improvements, and extending the tram loop.

Why

The street is in a substandard condition and the sewer pipe and the road need to be rebuilt. The work will make High Street more people-friendly and restore a vibrant part of the central city.

Where

High Street, Central City.

When

5 July 2021 to early December 2021 (weather/site condition dependent).

Contact

The contractor is Fulton Hogan Ltd. Phone 0800 275 342 (24 hours, 7 days). Advise us if you have specific property access requirements e.g. medical visits, home help, large vehicle deliveries, planned works.

Impacts to traffic and residents/businesses

  • There will be temporary traffic management in place at various times including: road closures, one-ways, shoulder closures, lane drops, and temporary parking restrictions. These changes  will be communicated closer to the time.
  • The bulk of the work will occur during the day, but there will be times when night work is required when the roads are quieter and less congested. The contractor will give 48 hours’ notice to affected parties before any night works start.
  • Business and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
  • Vehicle access to properties may be temporarily restricted at times. The contractor will door knock beforehand to allow the movement of vehicles if necessary.
  • There will be construction noise that we will try to keep to a minimum, and some traffic delays and cordoned off areas during these works. We will work with people along the street to find convenient times to do this work and will provide regular updates during construction.

Project details

  • Work area: High Street (Cashel Mall to Tuam Street), Cashel Street (High Street to Manchester Street), and Lichfield Street (Manchester Street towards the Bus Interchange), Central City.
  • The work includes replacing stormwater, sewer, and lateral pipes along High Street from Cashel Street to Manchester Street and along Lichfield Street towards the Bus Interchange.
  • There will be site-wide streetscape improvements including resurfacing of the road in Cashel Street and creating a flush paved street in the High Street South block (Lichfield Street to Tuam Street).
  • The tram route will be extended along Lichfield Street to Poplar Street and back up High Street, with new tram poles and overhead lines installed to facilitate the tram extension.
  • The Tuam Street intersection will be simplified as part of the works. There will also be a lighting upgrade and feature lighting installed.
  • The invasive work will be completed by late November/early December 2021. The contractor will return after this to complete less-invasive activities.
