What |
We will be carrying out remediation work on Lighthouse Road including reconstruction of the road, construction of a new retaining wall and installation of drains to help stabilise the land. |
|---|---|
Why |
The works are necessary due to the slip and land movement that occurred following a significant weather event in May 2025. A permanent repair strategy is required to improve the resilience of the road and surrounding land. |
Where |
41/43 Lighthouse Road, Akaroa, approximately 1km from Onuku Road. |
When |
23 March 2026 to late June 2026. Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm (weather/site condition dependent). |

Work impacts
Access requirements
Please let us know if you have medical appointments, livestock movements, hay/bailage, fertiliser, machinery movements, or fuel deliveries, or any other large vehicle movements or business critical movements, planned between 23 March and June 2026.
Day to day small deliveries will be managed onsite with our temporary traffic management staff who will assist residents and businesses with safe access where possible.
If you need to travel through the site during a closure period, please speak to our staff.
Weather and ground conditions
Please note:
Both the retaining wall and road reconstruction are highly weather dependent.
The installation time for horizontal drains may vary due to challenging or unpredictable ground conditions.
If weather conditions are not favourable for completing the road construction stage of the project, this work could be completed in springtime with road access reinstated over the winter period.
New slip
The road remains down to a single lane past the site of the new slip that occurred further down Lighthouse Road after the February 2026 rain event. The new slip site has been reviewed by geotechnical engineers and remediation work will be carried out at the same time as repairs to the May 2025 slip site.
