Wairakei Road railway crossing - signal upgrades

What

We're upgrading the traffic signals at the railway crossing on Wairakei Road (near Jeffreys Road) as part of a project to upgrade traffic signals in this area.

Why

These signals are at the end of their service life and need to be replaced.

When

16 February 2026 to 20 March 2026. Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm (weather/site condition dependent).

Details

We're upgrading the signals at the railway crossing on Wairakei Road. We'll be working during the day from Monday, 16 February 2026 to Friday, 13 March 2026.

Traffic Impacts

  • Traffic along Wairakei Road and Strowan Road near the work area will be maintained in both directions under a stop/go system.
  • There will be no exit from Westholme Street onto Wairakei Road.
  • There will be no left turn from Wairakei Road onto Jeffreys Road.

Information for road users

  • Cyclists will need to merge with traffic through the site.
  • We will temporarily remove on-street parking to allow space for the works. Local businesses in the area will remain open during this work.
  • Please follow all signage and crew directions.
  • A 30km/h speed limit will be in place so we can keep our team and everyone safe.

Information for residents and businesses

  • Access to properties and businesses for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be impacted at times. We'll aim to provide advance warning where possible.
  • We will help people to get around the site. Please advise our team if you have specific requirements e.g. medical visits, large deliveries, home help or any planned works.
  • There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, and we will do our best to keep this to a minimum.
  • The work will have no impact on any services such as electricity, telecommunications and gas.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the roads.
  • Please put your bins out as usual by 6am on your collection day. Our team will move them and return them.
  • Due to the nature of the intersection, night works may be required during this project. Residents and businesses in the area will receive notification about this prior to work.
