Details

  • Up until the 1960s, the site operated as an informal landfill where all sorts of materials, including hazardous waste, were dumped.
  • Testing of the soil has confirmed the presence of contaminants, including heavy metals and poly cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), associated with old gas works waste, and asbestos.
  • The contaminants do not pose any immediate risk to the water supply but can, in the long-term, degrade the polyethylene pipes that are used in the water supply network. It is important that the soil is permanently removed to ensure the safety of the water supply and its compliance with the national Drinking Water Standards.
  • Residents and passers-by will see workers wearing full personal protective equipment, including masks. We want to assure residents living near the site that there is no cause for alarm, and that this is standard health and safety practice when dealing directly with contaminants.
  • During the works, contractors will use dust management protocols such as wetting down the exposed soil and covering stockpiles to prevent dust generation. Air quality monitors will also be used to monitor air particles as an additional precautionary measure.
  • Trucks will be moving slowly through the pump station site and will enter and exit from the shared driveway of the former Edgeware Pool site. There will be no large trucks entering and exiting the site from Trafalgar Street.
  • Traffic management will be in place on Edgeware Road informing motorists of the movements.
