Durham Street and Cambridge Terrace

Durham Street/Cambridge Terrace from Kilmore Street to Tuam Street is currently being upgraded.

The Project

Durham Street, the main southbound road corridor on the western side of the central city, is being enhanced with landscaping and improved traffic flow.

It will have two lanes of one-way traffic, on-street parking on the western side, and a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians on the eastern side next to the Avon River.

The block between Lichfield Street and Tuam Street will be changed from the existing two southbound lanes to two southbound lanes, a single northbound lane and an on-road southbound cycle lane. This will provide an easy way to access the new Lichfield Street car park and retail precinct, for travellers from the west.

Trees, landscaping and rain gardens will also improve the streetscape and suit the slower speed environment of the inner core.

Some changes are taking place to the road layout on Durham Street at the end of April 2018.

Ōtākaro Ltd is working on the introduction of a new north-bound lane to make it easier to get to where you want to go, like the Retail Precinct, or the new car parking buildings on Lichfield Street.

There will also be two south-bound lanes of traffic, as well as:

  • A south-bound turning lane to turn into Tuam Street.
  • A south-bound cycle lane.

The north-bound lane will make it easier to get to the Retail Precinct, the new car parking buildings on Lichfield Street and businesses on Oxford Terrace west of Durham Street.

You can watch an animation of the changes(external link), and find more project-related information on the Otakaro website(external link).

Keep an eye out for the electronic signs on Durham and Tuam Streets for updates.
