New traffic signals at the intersection of Wigram and Hayton roads and a new shared path to improve safety and traffic flow.

We’re installing new traffic signals at the intersection of Wigram and Hayton roads to help meet the needs of a growing community and new facilities in the area.

Starting in February 2026, work will get underway to replace the existing three-way priority-controlled intersection with a four-way signalised intersection, helping improve traffic flow and safety for all road users.

A new shared path will also be built on the northern side of Wigram Road, connecting the existing path from where it currently terminates at Hayton Reserve, through to the Wigram-Hayton intersection.

This will improve pedestrian and cyclist access to the Little River Link cycleway and provide a safer environment for everyone who uses this busy arterial route.

The existing access road to the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub (Ngā Puna Wai Access Road) via the Christchurch Southern Motorway underpass will be sealed and connected to the intersection.

Since it opened in 2018, Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub has continued to develop, with the opening of the Netsal Centre in 2023. An artificial sports hub(external link) is also planned for development on the Ngā Puna Wai North piece of land adjacent to Wigram Road.

Providing an alternative formal entrance to the Ngā Puna Wai site will provide for better traffic flow and complement events being held on the site

Traffic impacts

  • Traffic management will be in place.
  • Hayton Road will be closed at Wigram Road while works are carried out, with temporary stop/go or traffic signal management on Wigram Road to maintain two-way traffic.
  • In partnership with our contractor Higgins, we'll make sure there's information on any detours or other changes to traffic flows throughout the duration of the work programme. We’ll update this page with details as the project progresses.
  • The project is due to start on 16 February 2026 and is expected to take approximately three months to complete. The start works notice(external link) has more details.
