We’re working in Templeton to construct the next section of Puari ki Niho-toto South Express Cycleway and complete upgrades to water and roading infrastructure.
We're combining construction on the next section of the South Express cycleway with upgrades to roading and water infrastructure in Templeton.
South Express is a separate two-way shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. The section we are constructing extends along the south railway side of Waterloo Road, Railway Terrace and Jones Road. Once the full cycleway is completed, it will link Christchurch city to Templeton, joining up with the Selwyn District Council’s cycleway on Jones Road to provide a safe link through to Rolleston.
We're also installing lighting to improve visibility, increasing safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
Puari ki Niho-toto is a key part of Christchurch’s major cycleways network, which is designed to be a safe and convenient option to get people on bikes to where they want to go.
While we're working in Templeton on the cycleway, we’re also taking the opportunity to:
We’re combining these projects together in a single contract to ensure a coordinated approach to work in the area and minimise the overall disruption to residents, businesses and commuters.
In March 2026, our contractors started another project to replace the water supply pipes on Waterloo Road between Bicknor Street and Kirk Road, and on Kirk Road between Waterloo Road and Bailey Street. This work is being coordinated with the replacement of stormwater and water pipes at the intersection of State Highway 1/Main South Road, Kirk Road and Trents Road.
We know roadworks can be frustrating. We’ve carefully planned our programme to keep traffic flowing and get out of the way as quickly as possible.
Traffic management is in place, and you should expect delays when travelling through the area. During the work, there will be times when on-street parking and vehicle access to properties are temporarily restricted. The contractor will contact residents directly to move vehicles if necessary.
There is now a two-way system from Banks Street northbound, which can be used to enter Bailey Street as a viable detour to access Mahoe Street.
Local businesses remain open.
From Sunday 26 April to Friday 1 May 2026, Mahoe Street and Railway Terrace will be closed onto Kirk Road. Banks Street, Bicknor Street and Kissel Street can also be used as a commuting route.

Mahoe Street and Railway Terrace will be open for the ANZAC parade on Saturday 25 April, to ensure buses have a viable alternative route.
