From February to July 2026, we’re working in Templeton to construct the next section of Puari ki Niho-toto South Express Cycleway and complete upgrades to water and roading infrastructure.
South Express currently extends from the city to Hornby. The upcoming work will extend the cycleway west along Waterloo Road from Barters Road to Jones Road. Construction of this stage is expected to take about five months.
Once the full cycleway is completed, it will link Christchurch city to Templeton, joining up with the Selwyn District Council’s cycleway on Jones Road to provide a safe link through to Rolleston.
Puari ki Niho-toto is a key part of Christchurch’s major cycleways network, which is designed to be a safe and convenient option to get people on bikes to where they want to go.
Our work in Templeton includes extending the South Express cycleway west down Waterloo Road from Barters Road to Jones Road.
South Express is a separated two-way shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. The section we are constructing will travel along the south railway side of Waterloo Road, Railway Terrace and Jones Road, where it will connect with the cycleway to Rolleston.
Lighting will be installed to improve visibility, increasing safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
We’re also taking the opportunity to complete several other infrastructure upgrades in the area:
We’re combining these projects together in a single contract to ensure a coordinated approach to work in the area and minimise the overall disruption to residents, businesses and commuters.
Separately from this work, we will also be upgrading water infrastructure in Waterloo and Kirk Roads.
Traffic management will be in place from Monday 9 February 2026. Road users should expect delays when travelling through the area.
Our contractors will begin working in several locations on Jones Road and Waterloo Road. For the first week, 9 to 15 February, we will maintain traffic in two directions on:
The extent of the works on Railway Terrace requires a road closure to be in place from 16 February until 13 March 2026. The detour will be clearly sign-posted:
Local businesses will remain open.
We know roadworks can be frustrating. We’ve carefully planned our programme to keep traffic flowing and get out of the way as quickly as possible.
