We're widening the shared pathway next to the Antigua Street footbridge.

We're making improvements in the area

The Antigua Street footbridge (also known as the Boatshed Bridge) is well-used by cyclists and pedestrians and can get very congested during peak hours. In fact, this footbridge is one of the busiest active transport junctions in the city!

We’re reducing the size of the raised garden outside the Antigua Boatsheds and Café, so we can widen the shared pathway.

This will give everyone more room to move, making it safer and easier to use this area.

Impacts during the work

  • Work will take around four weeks. We’ll be working during the day between Tuesday 3 June and early July.
  • The bridge will remain open during this time, but the width of the pathway will be reduced while we work.
  • Cyclists are asked to dismount and walk with their bikes when travelling over the bridge and through the worksite. This will help to keep everyone safe while we have a narrower path in place.
  • Parts of the footpath outside the Antigua Boatsheds and Café will be temporarily closed, but the business will remain open as usual.
  • Some on-street car parking will be temporarily unavailable during construction, but there will be no permanent loss of parking.

See the start works notice(external link) for more information about our pathway-widening work, and for the contractor's contact information. If you need additional support when moving through the work area, please ask one of our crew for assistance.

Please note: Work is also underway on the nearby Antigua Street cycle connection. Please allow extra time when travelling through this area, particularly during peak times.

Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience while we make this pathway safer for everyone.

Consultation

This project was consulted on between 15 February and 15 March 2022 in conjunction with a consultation on improvements to the Antigua Street cycle connection, which is currently under construction nearby. The Antigua Street footbridge received 95 submissions and the Antigua Street cycle connection received 117 submissions.

The majority of submitters commented on both projects, with a small number commenting on just one.

See the details of the consultation(external link). Please note that the line markings and 'slow zone' have already been put in place. This work will only focus on reducing the size of the large raised planter.
