In March 2014 we launched the Your Library, Your Voice campaign to find out what you wanted in your New Central Library – how it should look and feel, and the services it could provide. We gathered more than 2400 ideas by visiting Christchurch schools, asking people in libraries and at community events to put their thoughts on postcards, and through polls and comments on the Your Voice website. Based on that public feedback, the design includes:

  • a mix of vibrant family-friendly areas and quiet places to read and study
  • a café
  • open plan, light airy spaces
  • indoor and outdoor seating
  • plenty of computers and access to new technology
  • meeting rooms and other special features
  • public lockers, buggy and bike parking.

Safety and sustainability also came through as important factors in the design. The Central Library will be earthquake resistant, and the multi-purpose design can meet changing community needs.
