Christchurch is building a city that will be stronger, smarter and more resilient to the physical, social, and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century.
On 4 December 2013, the Rockefeller Foundation announced Christchurch had been selected to join the international 100 Resilient Cities Network. Christchurch is now part of a global network of urban areas focused on building resilience, sharing best practises and leading by example for cities throughout the world.
100 Resilient Cities is a concept pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation(external link) with the aim of helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social and economic challenges of the 21st century.
Once selected to be a part of the global network, cities receive funding and support to help strengthen their resilience – both to the shocks of disasters and to the stresses that affect the everyday lives of residents, like food and water shortages, violence or inefficient public transport.
The idea is that, by addressing these shocks and stresses and planning now to deal with them, cities will function better in both good times and bad.
Christchurch City Council, with the support of its strategic partners, made an application to become part of the global network and was selected from 400 cities around the world.
As a result, Christchurch will receive support from the Rockefeller Foundation to hire a Chief Resilience Officer and receive access to tools, technical support and resources for implementing a comprehensive resilience plan. Partners to the application were: Canterbury District Health Board(external link), Environment Canterbury(external link), University of Canterbury(external link), Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce(external link), Ngāi Tahu(external link) and Central Government(external link).
Christchurch City Council has appointed Chief Resilience Officer Mike Gillooly(external link), who is leading the development of a resilience strategy for Christchurch and liaising with the 100 Resilient Cities network, strategic partners and the community.

Based on the engagement work carried out in December 2014 and over February / March 2015 the Council is working with strategic partners to address our existing challenges and prepare for future ones in a way that is "fit for Christchurch". The community will be involved in all aspects of our resilience conversations going forward.
Preliminary Resilience Assessment
On 24 September 2015, the Christchurch City Council adopted a Preliminary Resilience Assessment report for Christchurch - the first stage in the development of a Resilience Strategy for Greater Christchurch.
