Council 14 December 1993

1. That the following criteria for planting be adopted as the policy for tree planting in streets:

(a) The planting must be appropriate in size, density and position. This is vital to ensure traffic visibility and personal safety.

(b) There must be available space for the tree to thrive. The current practice to introduce:

(i) Small tree species for minimum footpath width of 3.0 metres

(ii) Larger tree species for minimum footpath width of 4.5 metres

(iii) Small trees species for minimum berm width of 2.0 metres.

has worked satisfactorily and should continue.

(c) The effect on existing kerb and channel, underground and overhead services must be minimised. The current practice:

(i) To install appropriate root barriers as required

(ii) To be minimum distance of 700mm from kerb

(iii) The location of tree to be 3.0 metres from sewer laterals.

has worked satisfactorily and should continue.

2. That as part of the consultation process, information regarding suitable street trees be given to residents for comment.
