Christchurch has a network of more than 130km of walking and mountain biking tracks. It is also a city of parks and public gardens.
Our plan
While some of our older English-style buildings were destroyed, treasured buildings such as the Arts Centre, the former Municipal Chambers and the Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings remain.
We also have heritage buildings, such as Our City Ōtautahi, the former Municipal Chambers, that we value but are expensive to repair.
We will spend $35 million in the next 10 years repairing heritage buildings, including:
- Robert McDougall Art Gallery strengthening.
- Edmonds Band Rotunda.
We plan to delay the repair of the Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings until 2029 as the $204 million cost is considered too great to include in this long term plan.
We propose spending $267 million over the next 10 years to maintain and improve our parks and heritage assets, including:
- Community parks, buildings and assets renewals ($39 million).
- Community park development programme ($26 million).
- Former Municipal Chambers ($18 million).
What has changed after public feedback?
We are bringing forward funding to:
- Address urgent weather-tightness issues on Robert McDougall Art Gallery and Old Municipal Chambers.
- Repair Coronation Hall, to support a strong community use for the building.
- Develop Thompson Park in New Brighton.
