About the Community Board
The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board holds regular meetings that you’re welcome to attend. Anyone can ask to speak to the Community Board about a local issue, activity or project.
The Community Board's main roles are to:
- Represent and act as an advocate for the interests of our community.
- Consider and report on all matters referred to us by the council, or any matter of interest to the board.
- Maintain an overview of services provided by the council within the community.
- Communicate with community organisations and special interest groups within the community.
Every three years, councils are required to publicly consult on and adopt a long term plan (LTP) covering our services and major projects over the next 10 years.
The Long Term Plan outlines how much these services and projects will cost, how they will be funded and what rates will need to be.
We need to make sure that we’ve got the right balance of what we can deliver with what’s affordable. We’re keen to hear what you think about our plan and priorities, and other ideas you may have.

The Ray White New Brighton Duke Festival of Surfing 2024
The New Brighton Duke Festival of Surfing is all about the spirit of Aloha and Aroha (Aroha and Aloha both translate to love in Te Reo Māori and the Olelo Hawai’i native language
Duke Kahanamoku was an indigenous Hawaiian and 5 time olympic meadalist in swimming, winning medals in 1912, 1920 and 1924. a keen swimmer, Surf lifesaver and Surfer from Waikiki, Oahu Hawai’i, his dream was for surfing to be in the olympics, a dream turned reality in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Though pre european Māori had forms of surfing, Duke Kahanamoku is responsible for officially re-introducing Surfing as a modern sport to New Zealand, in the form of public, flashy and innovative demonstrations held at beaches all over Aotearoa, one of them being New Brighton Beach. He also introduced surfing to the east coast of America and later, California, aswell as Australia. If you venture to the pier you may see a replica of Duke’s signature redwood surfboard erected in memory of the 100th anniversary of his surfing demonstration at our beach.
In Memory of Duke Kahanamoku and his wish to spread the spirit of Aloha through surfing, all over the world - The Ray White Duke Festival of Surfing was born.
What to expect:
- Surf Comp!
- The Market
- Art Exhibition
- Live Music
….and a lot more to come!
