Councillor and Community Board candidates for Riccarton Ward in the 2022 local elections.

Riccarton Ward - Councillor (1 vacancy)

Mark CHIRNSIDE

Chirny for Mayor

Mark CHIRNSIDE

My principal place of residence is not in the Riccarton Ward area. I am also standing for Mayor.

I'm standing for Council because I believe that Christchurch needs new blood and a new culture of accountability. I'm standing here in Riccarton Ward because this is where I have built my business, and where my deepest connections to the community are. I want to be an active, energetic and always accessible Councillor, which I believe this ward desperately needs.
I have a depth of experience bringing people together to achieve exciting and unlikely things, and I want to do that for our city. As we grow, we're experiencing growing pains, and there will be friction between peoples' competing visions for our city, but I am always so humbled by what can be achieved just by tapping into the extraordinary talent I've found in Christchurch, and connecting the right people with each other.
Vote for an energetic, connected, and united Christchurch.

My principal place of residence is in the Riccarton Ward area. I am also standing for Riccarton Ward of the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board.

As a father, I care deeply about this place for us and for those after us. Riccarton is filled with some amazing people, who like me, care for their neighbourhood. We have so much environmental and economic potential, let's build on that.
By day, I work with youth in sports and also run a business consultancy. I am a strong advocate for young people, local businesses, and community resilience, and have experience in high-performance sports, business development, and governance. I am also enjoying being part of the Canterbury West Melton Water Zone Committee.
I am a solutions-focused person who is passionate about people and I'm always looking to bring about positive change. I want to focus on inclusive and accessible facilities, green spaces for families and residents, clean drinking water, and reliable public transport. I also want to see business boom!
Let's work together so that Riccarton thrives.

Fiona JONES

My principal place of residence is not in the Riccarton Ward area. I am also standing for Riccarton Ward of the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board.

My goal as your Councillor is to work positively and proactively for Riccarton and to be actively involved with the community. I believe in having an open door policy to all constituents and I will listen and take your concerns to Council.
I am a 48 year old woman with experience as a Senior IT Engineer and I will bring my skill set and experience of project management to the Council, a strength I believe is severely lacking at Council level at present.
As a council we need to work for a common goal, to reduce rates, stop overspending, and have better financial management. I will advocate your present concerns on housing intensification and roading issues. I oppose the chlorination of our water and Three Waters.
I am not a political party member nor affiliated to any party.
My hobbies include playing netball, scuba-diving, home renovations and watching rugby.

We have important decisions to make that will decide if our city succeeds in years to come. For too long, our City Council hasn't been accountable, trustworthy, or delivering results for Riccarton. It's incredibly important that we choose a new way forward with fresh, completely independent, perspectives that will deliver results. I offer unparalleled communication skills, community networks within Riccarton, and vision for our city.
My values are extremely important to me and applied to all my interactions with the world - in particular, my politics and policies. People, progress, hope. People must always be centre of mind. Progress should be pursued so we can adapt to the challenges we face. Hope will guide our work and turn aspirations into reality. I will bring a strong, fresh voice to the City Council which we desperately need.

You matter. A vote for Peter Simmonds is a vote for a strong advocate for Riccarton's citizens.
With my experience in community work, people and facilitation skills and my ability to find the right people and resources, I am confident I can do the job for you. As your representative, I will improve self-employment opportunities; see our streets are tidy; see our youth back into school, training or work; push back against intrusive housing intensification; support residents facing rising power, rents, food and petrol costs to access the help needed; use sport and community initiatives to keep our vulnerable youth from crime and into work or study; work with police to deal with car smash and grabs; create safer and cleaner parks and opportunities for locals including our children and youth to have a stake in our community and city, so creating leaders for our future.

Renée WALKER

My principal place of residence is not in the Riccarton Ward area.

Simply put, I love our city.
I've passionately advocated for it in community engagement, arts leadership, business recovery and central and local government roles for more than a decade, ensuring the local rebuild remained on the national agenda.
We have a strong foundation. There are challenges remaining but with challenge comes opportunity.
Now is the time to realise our bold ambition. In bringing community, creative, and commercial interests together, spending wisely, and supporting people to lead rich and balanced lives, we can be the best City in the country. This will take aspirational thinking, passion, energy and vision. If elected as your city councillor for Riccarton, I will bring all these things and more.
A strong focus on:
People, not politics: Community engagement and partnership
Fair and affordable rates
Smarter spending
Transparent and timely decision making.
I am committed to our city and would be honoured to represent you.

Sam YAU

My principal place of residence is not in the Riccarton Ward area.

Originally from Malaysia, I came to New Zealand in 1985 to pursue my bachelor of commerce from the Canterbury University and have since made Christchurch my home.
Since graduating in early 1990s, I have been self-employed; running my small business and managing my own residential developments. I am determined to use my business experience and knowledge to ensure our rates are spent wisely by our Council.
Christchurch is an ethnically diverse city. It is important to have culturally balanced voices around the table. My faithful leadership in ethnic communities' groups over the years stands to build a more inclusive city that we can all be proud of.
Every decision I stand for will be transparent, the rates' setting is affordable, and the spending of our rates dollars is beneficial to every Christchurch resident.

Your Strong, Experienced Advocate with real commitment to this community where I have lived over 30 years, raising two children.

Accredited for resource consent hearings, I have the planning experience to advocate effectively for our community facing unprecedented government-directed housing intensification. I am committed to protecting our residential environment and giving residents a real voice on local decisions. I stopped apartment zoning in north Riccarton, promoted parking restrictions in residential streets and retained Council services at the Riccarton Community Centre.
I will continue strengthening relationships with people from diverse cultures.
I am passionate about protecting our heritage: former Trustee Riccarton House and Canterbury Museum; MA(Hons) University Canterbury, former human resource manager, trained teacher and counsellor.

Luke CHANDLER

My principal place of residence is in the Riccarton Ward of the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board area.

It's time for a new face and a new perspective for Riccarton. With the Council's satisfaction rating at an all-time low, it is time for a change. I am ready to get stuck in, work for you and be vocal in bringing solutions, not problems.
I am a self-employed consultant to criminal barristers and run Mythical Fibre, a small Christchurch-based Internet Service Provider. I have lived in Christchurch for over a decade, a place I proudly call home.
Having been involved in several community projects, many through Rebuild Christchurch and the Sockburn Residents Association. It has helped me understand the challenges and needs for the Riccarton community. I am campaigning on a back-to-basics philosophy of; supporting local democracy and control of our assets, sensible and smarter spending, delivering core services better and supporting our local businesses. Kia ora, my name is Imam Gamal Fouda. I'm proud to have represented the Riccarton Ward for the last three years and am seeking your support to continue to ensure your voices are heard.
Our Ward is a vibrant corner of Christchurch where transport and housing are important as our neighbourhood becomes home to more people. I am committed to ensuring that Riccarton continues to be the best place to live in Christchurch, where all our local people feel included and our local businesses flourish. Our diversity is our strength and I pledge to continue to work tirelessly to build bridges between all our communities.
Public spaces where we play and spend time together are also important to me. That is why I have worked as part of a team to ensure that we have a community garden in Riccarton. I will continue to work hard to be your advocate.

Mel GRAHAM

My principal place of residence is in the Riccarton Ward of the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board area.

Kia ora, my name is Mel.
I am a full-time student at the University of Canterbury studying towards a degree in Youth & Community Leadership. I chose to run for this position because young people are often underrepresented in politics.
Considering that the university is a part of the Riccarton ward, I would see this role as an opportunity to connect the young university community to local politics and allow us to be better represented.
By electing me, you will be empowering the youth perspective and giving us a seat at the table. I would ensure that my fellow students are able to hear more about what is going on in local politics, and provide them with a place to go if there are things they want the board to know about or consider.
