Councillor and Community Board candidates for Coastal Ward in the 2022 local elections.

Coastal Ward - Councillor (1 vacancy)

Don CROSS

Don CROSS

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward area. I am also standing for Coastal Ward of the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board.

I am the proud father of three adult sons and four grandchildren and have lived in the Coastal Ward for many years. I love this area and the people, hence my many years as a volunteer touch rugby referee for both adults and children. The future of the Coastal Ward concerns me as, over recent years, residents have experienced a sense of disconnect and disappointment in council. It is time for change.
As a people person my focus is to assist and care for those of all cultures and ages. Extensive experience within mental health, physical education, special needs, addiction, corrections and community service providers, has provided me the skills to address problems and action solutions. I commit to representing your voice on issues such as rates, three waters, crime, infrastructure, simply getting the basics right. Let's work together for the future that our Coastal Ward deserves.

Celeste DONOVAN

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward area.

Our coastal communities need a strong local advocate who listens to residents and understands the issues.
Since being elected to Council last year, I have worked hard to bridge the gap between Council and our communities. I helped establish live-streaming of our Community Board meetings, a community advisory group for the wastewater plant issues and an Engagement Working Group.
I've successfully secured funding to support local business, for the Pükeko centre in Parklands and for the New Brighton mall.
I believe we need to show leadership to prepare for and adapt to climate change, and ensure our communities are at the forefront of decision-making.
I have a Masters' degrees in politics and law and know how to navigate council and advocate for you.
My commitment to you is to stay engaged, to listen and work hard for stronger communities, a healthy environment, and a better future.

Kim MONEY

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward area.

The things that matter to you matter to me. We are tired of commitment without action, underinvestment, overdue earthquake repairs, core infrastructure work continually deferred, and decisions made for us without us. With your support, we can make right these injustices and turn the tide.
Our area's full potential will remain untapped without the skills and experience I will bring to the council table. As former Community Board Chair, I bring a proven record of successful advocacy contributing to the current momentum: Hot Pools, beachside playground, and reinstatement of the District Plan Residential Unit Overlay enabling coastal development.
For decades I have lived, volunteered, and led projects in our community - North Beach Residents' Association, Community Connection Nga Ngaru Trust (Beach Promenade), New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Society.
I have vision, experience and determination. I will staunchly advocate for you, ensure your voice is heard, and get things done.

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward of the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board area.

I have lived, worked, voluntered and owned property in the East for almost the entirity of my adult life. It is a place I feel deeply connected to and passionate about, an attribute I believe I share with my fellow residents.
I believe we need to focus on the future of our Ward to ensure it thrives, where all it's residents feel that they are being treated equally, outstanding issues are resolved, where people feel heard, respected and valued.
Good, timely communication is central to this and I am committed to ensuring greater access to information and decision making those who make their homes and livelihoods here. Being accessible to people is a key component of this.
I have a proven track record of getting things done in response to community need, building relationships and bringing people together to achieve positive outcomes for our community.

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward of the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board area.

I'm a young bloke who grew up in North New Brighton. I attended Freeville School and then went on to Shirley Boys' High, where I was Deputy Head-Boy. I'm now at university studying Law, Economics and International Relations. I have grown up walking down the same broken, neglected roads you have, driving down streets with never-ending roadworks and flooding. Going door-to-door, I continue to hear the resentment towards the preference that Council gives the Central City over the suburbs.
Key projects like the Pages Road Bridge have been deferred, and we are still pushing for the basics. Our ward has such a vibrant community and it's time we had the funding to support its development. It's time to make our ward safer, more accessible and it's time to have the representation, infrastructure and transparency we deserve. I promise to work hard to represent our people effectively.

Our community has faced some unique challenges over the last 15 years. We need someone to represent us who understands these firsthand. A fresh voice from the community with fresh ideas addressing local issues like disengaged youth and road safety.
Having served in the teaching profession for 25 years as a teacher, Head of Department, and Dean, I know how to genuinely listen to student and parent concerns, to problem solve community issues, and provide structured guidance and advice. As a parent of children in the local Roosters Rugby Club, I stepped up to Club Captain to help provide a better environment for our local tamariki in an active and healthy way.
I hear what our community is saying. I am part of our community. I want to take an active role in helping our community feel safe, prosper, and thrive. Let me be your voice on our Community Board.

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward of the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board area.

I have lived, worked, and played in our beautiful Coastal Ward my entire life.
Life Member of the Waimairi Surf Lifesaving Club, Graffiti Programme volunteer and key roles in Keep QEII in the East and the Brighten Up Brighton event.
Current Community Board deputy chair, part time Aquafit instructor, business owner and am happily married with 2 adult sons.
Despite unprecedented times I feel I've represented the community strongly, made great connections and communicated well, however like residents I feel frustrated at the lack of progress and transparency.
We are still waiting for some major projects to be done - roads, paths, bridges, stop banks, estuary edge protection. We need to prioritise fixing the broken, stopping the flooding, getting the basics right and crime reducing initiatives to make our communities safer.
I would also love to see more community input into future opportunities in our red zones.
