Councillor and Community Board candidates for Spreydon Ward.

Spreydon Ward - Councillor (1 required)

Melanie COKER

Melanie COKERThe People's Choice - Labour

My principal place of residence is in the Spreydon Ward area.

I am the current Deputy Chair of the Spreydon- Cashmere Community Board. I have a PhD in biochemistry and have been a research scientist for 10 years. I also have business experience as the director of my own education company AHeadStart Ltd.
While elected I have assisted residents to establish local community groups, and helped to retain community facilities such as the Hoon Hay Community Centre. I have also encouraged diversity and participation in local democracy, especially with a focus on our young people.
Council needs to get the basics right, including fixing footpaths and repairing roads. Financial prudence in decision-making is essential.
My top priorities for Council include pure drinking water with reliable infrastructure; accessible parks and recreational facilities; clean, healthy waterways and ecosystems; planning for climate change; and reliable and safe travel for everyone.
Your vote will enable me to continue to support and advocate for our community.

Born and bred in Christchurch I'm a passionate advocate of this city. Public service runs in my blood - my great grandfather was former Prime Minister Richard Seddon. I believe actions speak louder than words and will act quickly when necessary. This led me to organise March to Save Our Water, attended by over 5000 people, and the Remembering Those That Lost Their Lives on March 15 vigil, which drew over 40,000 people. As a father to a young son, protecting our precious drinking water, ensuring it is there for future generations, remains an issue of importance. Working for a local roading company gives me a down to earth, practical hands on focus. I believe I bring to Council a young, fresh approach including strong communication skills, leadership, integrity, accountability and a great deal of positivity to take this city forward.

My principal place of residence is not in the Spreydon Ward area. I am also standing for the Spreydon Ward of the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board.

I work and live in the area as a maintenance contractor and film maker. I have been happily married 12 years and am passionate about this city.
These are my priorities if I have the honour of becoming the next city Councillor for Spreydon.
Roading: Taking 20 years to get our roads back to pre quake condition is unacceptable. This must be the councils number one priority.
Rate rises: I think rates are getting to high and not enough attention is being paid to spending. If the forecasted rises go ahead it will cause real hardship.
Chlorine: I think the council acted on bad information when they put chlorine in our perfectly good drinking water.
The sooner it's out the better.
Parking: I would like to see more parking in the inner city. Especially the free/cheap kind.

My principal place of residence is not in the Spreydon Ward of the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board area. I am also standing for Spreydon Ward Councillor.

I am standing for the position of community board member in the wonderful community of Spreydon.
I was raised in this area and attended Somerfield primary, South intermediate and Cashmere high.
I work in Christchurch as a maintenance contractor and film maker and writer. In these roles I am out in the community talking to people. I think I know what people want and what their concerns are. In my film making role I have had the opportunity to work with many different community and charity groups.
I am motivated to run because I have a fundamental belief in the democratic ideal. I believe the job of a community board member is to facilitate what the community wants and not impose my beliefs.

Tubby HANSEN

Tubby HANSENA Bus for Somerfield

My principal place of residence is in the Spreydon Ward of the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board area. I am also standing for Christchurch Mayor and the Canterbury District Health Board.

We used to live in Holcolme Place, off Studholm Street towards the river, and I caught the bus on Somerfield Street to the Square. People now want to go to Barrington Mall for their grocery shopping so I will advocate for Bus 45 to go along Somerfield Street, both ways, to the exchange, and also to Barrington. We need traffic lights on Cashmere Road at Hoon Hay Road, and also Cashmere Road and Hendersons Road before someone gets killed.
We need a cycle lane through Selwyn Street Village which can be done by taking 12 feet off the Unbuilt on land on the west side of Selwyn Street. I cannot see the proposed shops on the west side be economic on that, only the War Nan fish and chip shop, the Sewing Shop, and Selwyn Dairy. It would be better to build a rest home on the site.

Karolin POTTER

Karolin POTTERThe People's Choice

My principal place of residence is in the Spreydon Ward of the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board area.

I am the current chair of the Spreydon Cashmere Community Board and I work hard. I have all my life been active in support of a society inclusive of old and young, new and born Kiwis and equality of opportunity for all.
On the community board, I initiated a programme to get sports gear out of peoples' wardrobes and into the hands of children who can't afford to buy it. I have advocated for indigenous flora and fauna, that will endure through climate change. I have consistently supported initiatives for clean clear water, housing for those in need, public transport that is economical and environmentally sound and access to buildings, transport and jobs for people with disabilities. I want the next council to prioritise climate change, environmental issues and restricted rates increases. I have personally always wanted free access to swimming pools for kids.

Callum STEWART-WARD

Callum STEWART-WARD The People's Choice - Labour

My principal place of residence is in the Spreydon Ward of the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board area.

I am asking for your support to represent Spreydon on our community Board.

I went to school at Hoon Hay Primary and Manning Intermediate. I now live on Parlane St, near Lincoln Rd. With a degree in Mechatronics Engineering, I work at Deloitte as an analyst. Previously I worked as a teacher aide at Addington Te Kura Taumatua.

In a rapidly changing world, I am a firm believer in young people and community led decision making. Last year I helped to build an urban farming start-up in Addington, and volunteered extensively as a youth mentor.
This year has been difficult for our city, especially our Muslim whänau. I am proud of how our community responded to hate, and I am committed ensuring that every person in our community knows that they belong.
I am standing for our young people, clean water, public transport, inclusion and a board that listens.
