Councillor and Community Board candidates for Fendalton Ward.

Fendalton Ward - Councillor (1 required)

David BENSON

David BENSONConservative Independent

My principal place of residence is in the Fendalton Ward area. I am also standing for the Fendalton Ward of the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board.

12 years as an elected Councillor. Served on the Finance, District Plan and Engineering Committees, Chaired the Hearings Committee for 9 years. Good understanding of accounting, practical and logical.
Will be pushing to have the water rates being on a usage basis, sewerage and land drainage on a UAC not on the capital value of your property.
Will be pushing for a full disclosure of what the annual costs to the ratepayers will be once the following are all completed, covered stadium, indoor events centre, convention centre, town hall.
Many of the streets and footpaths in the ward are in an appalling state. I will be pushing for a 10 year plan to get these essential amenities back to an acceptable state including underground utilities of sewer, water, storm water, possibly power and phone.
If you contact me, I will come back to you quickly, not 1 year later.

You have backed me as your city councillor for the past nine years.

My principal place of residence is in the Fendalton Ward area. I am also standing for Christchurch Mayor and the Canterbury District Health Board.

The loss of freedom of expression and the ability of Government and commercial organizations to track everything we do, especially in the wake of the 2019 Christchurch massacre, is of great concern to me. As well, now when someone wishes to hold any relevant entity to account for infringing on their freedoms and rights, their communication platform may be arbitrarily shut down.
The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, Cheryl Gwyn, under whose watch this regime was developed, is resigning in order to become a High Court judge.
We are digital data bought and sold, enduring financial slavery, and trapped in a surveillance state. We are also losing decent water, food and shelter.
Edward Snowden, the American whistle-blower, has warned about the threat to democracy posed by the misuse of data. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ5ASrORkXM&t=1144s
Elections meaning less democracy lost.

John BURN

John BURNIndependent

My principal place of residence is in the Fendalton Ward of the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board area.

I am a retired barrister, and in 1970 fronted a CHTV3 news programme for 2 years and then in the 80s spent 9 years as a city councillor here. After practising in law for 25 years, my wife and I and our three sons moved to Sydney where I was a member of the Sydney Bar for 20 years. Upon the death of my wife I returned here in 2014, and am in retirement. I have been a director of several public companies in both countries, 3 as chairman. My faults are writing too many letters to the Christchurch Press and being older than most candidates. But on the latter point, I am as fit as a flea and can be just as annoying. This month I became involved in opposing the extension of Merivale Mall and it has fired me up into making a contribution again to local government.

David CARTWRIGHT

My principal place of residence is in the Fendalton Ward of the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board area.

I am currently deputy chair of the FWH Community Board and seek re-election.
I am committed to our community, and those who live in it. The next few years will continue to be important for the development of Christchurch, and a strong community voice is needed to ensure we make the most of every opportunity.
I want to see a straightforward, common sense approach to the governance of Christchurch, with clear and open communication between all stakeholders.
My background is in hospitality and general management. I am a trustee for the NZ Flying Doctor service, national board member for Keep NZ Beautiful & KCB, former member NZ Institute of Directors.
My community involvement gives me opportunities to talk with people from a variety of organisations and interest groups; providing a broad perspective on what is happening across our city, and a sound base from which to advocate on different issues.

As a 4TH generation Cantabrian and lived in Christchurch for most of my life gives me a great sense of pride to live in the garden city. Family focused, a husband & father and married to Kathryn with four sons, attending primary school and tertiary education.
It's important I stand for what my children and the community believe. The opportunity to make a real difference is why I have chosen to stand for the community board. This is an exciting time to be part of local government. I can offer a straightforward, common sense approach to the governance of Christchurch with open and clear communication. If elected I offer my skills, my vision and my passion as a listener and a commitment to communicate the opinions and views of the community. I relish the opportunity to make a real difference for the future of Christchurch.

My principal place of residence is not in the Fendalton Ward of the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board area.

I am stepping up again with two terms of experience on the Fendalton Ward. Having lived there for most of my 26 years, I still and will always consider Fendalton home.
Being one of the younger representatives, I bring a youthful perspective endorsed by my previous terms and local knowledge.
As a trustee of the Christchurch Arts Festival Board, I have a passion for the arts and community, complemented by my background in law and entrepreneurship. These skills have equipped me with an appreciation for business, sustainability and creativity, values I seek to maximise and support throughout the ward.
My experience as a selected World Economic Forum Global Shaper has instilled my dedication for active citizenship and serving others, including the Fendalton community.
Thank you for your support over my previous two terms. I will continue making a positive change where it counts while pushing your values into action.
