Introducing the three-bin system

Properties outside of the Little River township are currently on a part-service for rubbish and recycling. Residents bring bagged rubbish to the Birdlings Flat Transfer Station on Saturdays and a small number of properties receive the kerbside recycling service, while others use the recycling drop-off site in Little River.

To achieve our waste minimisation targets, and to provide the convenience of a kerbside service, we’re planning to offer the kerbside three-bin service (rubbish, recycling and organics) to most residents between Cooptown and Gebbies Valley.

For some properties, where our collection trucks can’t access roads, we’ll provide additional community collection points with shared bins for recycling and rubbish collection, or offer individual property bins that can be dropped at the serviced end of the road.

These collection points are currently used in other parts of Banks Peninsula and we would run something very similar to the service in Port Levy. You can view the proposed collection route and community collection points in our interactive map.(external link)

Talk to the team

If you would like to discuss this project with the team, please join us:

Saturday, 20 November

Anytime between 10am and midday, Birdlings Flat Waste Transfer Station

Anytime between 1.30pm and 2.30pm, Little River Community Centre, Awa Iti Domain

Both events are outside (as weather allows) to accommodate Covid level 2 restrictions

Changes to your rates

Properties receiving a part service are currently charged $147.34. This is equivalent to 75% of the total Waste Minimisation Targeted Rate for organics and recycling.

Properties will be rated for the service they receive, meaning that if your property is eligible for the new kerbside service you will see a change in your rates to include the full Waste Minimisation Targeted Rate of $196.45 per year.

As part of the proposal, there will also be changes to the current drop-off services. Because we are providing kerbside bins and community collection points, the Little River recycling collection point will be closed and the Birdlings Flat Transfer Station will become a bulky item and greenwaste drop-off facility only.

We are also looking at offering greater flexibility for bin sizes(external link) - You can have your say on this as well and find more about how we charge for our bins and how this might change in the future.

Next steps

We’re asking for early public feedback now to get the views of the community and whether our residents support this proposal.

After this staff will analyse the feedback received and make any required refinements to the proposal.

Information on the final proposal will be communicated as part of the 2022/23 Annual Plan consultation next year.
