What we're doing

We’re making it safer for you to get around the Beckenham Loop, no matter how you travel. We’re proposing to lower the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h on some streets.

Changing 50 kilometres per hour speed limits to 40 kilometres per hour on these streets:

  • Eastern Terrace
  • Waimea Terrace
  • Fisher Avenue
  • Norwood Street
  • Beckenham Street
  • Tuscany Place
  • Sandwich Road
  • Martin Avenue
  • Birdwood Avenue
  • Malcolm Avenue (from Eastern Terrace toWaimae Terrace)
  • Corson Avenue
  • Riverview Street

What we asked

Is there anything we need to know before carrying out these changes?

For speed limits and parking restrictions to be effective, they need to be understood and supported by the community.

That’s why we want to hear from you.

What you said

We received 157 submissions from local residents and two organisations.

Key topics

  • Can the speed be 30km/h instead of 40km/h - The Waka Kotahi - NZTA is very specific about what speed limit can be placed on a road. Their Speed management guide identifies what speed a road should be based on its characteristics. Those include the traffic flow, the type of area (residential, Central Business District, etc.) The Beckenham Loop does not meet the criteria for 30km/h within this guide.
  • Expand the 40km/h speed limit to Tennyson Street – As Tennyson Street is an arterial road, it would not meet the requirements in the Waka Kotahi – NZTA’s  Speed management guide to become a 40km/h speed road.
  • Enforcement of the new speed limit - We will be advising NZ Police of the new speed limits to enable them to take appropriate enforcement action if required.
