Hello

Thank you for your interest in this project.

The next step in this process is for the Banks Peninsula Community Board to consider the submissions we’ve received.

With the recent Government announcement on Monday 23 March 2020 on raising the alert levels in the country, we are unable to schedule a Board Meeting until further notice.

I will be in touch with you when we have more certainty regarding timelines for this project.

Thank you for understanding.  If you have any questions, please give me a call or email me using the details below.

A staff report will be presented to Banks Peninsula Community Board for a decision. At this stage the report meeting is anticipated to be 20 April 2020 at 10.00am. However, Banks Peninsula Community Board use two venues; one in Akaroa and another in Little River.  Staff would like the report to be presented at a meeting using the Akaroa Board rooms so if the meeting on this proposed date gets scheduled for the Little River meeting room we will reschedule.

Proposed crossing build-out

Beach Road location of proposed crossing build-out

Aerial showing location for a new crossing point near Stanley Park and the fire station

We would like community feedback on a proposed crossing point, with kerb build-out, to align with the Stanley Park steps. Please see the aerial map below for further detail. The directional pavers highlighted in orange, on the map, are proposed to be white so as to be consistent with others along Beach Road. The reasons for creating this crossing build out are to:

  • create a safer crossing point for pedestrians with improved sight lines for traffic
  • prevent cars and buses from parking in front of the park entrance
  • make the Stanley Park entrance more visible

If approval is granted by Te Pātataka o Rākaihautū/Banks Peninsula Community Board we would like to begin construction mid 2020.

Update on Stanley Park steps

Where Stanley Park meets Beach Road there is an old set of stone steps which are in poor condition.  Public consultation was completed and approval granted to replace these steps several years ago.

Funding is now available to replace these steps and work will begin in late October. The steps will be re-aligned for better access and to provide room for the future  re-instatement of the bell tower, if funded. Locally sourced stone will be incorporated into the design to co-ordinate with local heritage values. A hand rail will also be included on one side of the steps.
