Distance | 4.5 km |
Time | One hour, one way. |
Dogs |
Must be on a leash in Central City until you pass over Fitzgerald Avenue. Effective control everywhere else. |
Description |
This shared-use all-weather pathway is 4 metres wide to meet the highest accessibility standards. From Barbadoes Street the pathway follows inside the Avon Loop, passing interpretation panels showcasing the rich history of the area. Crossing Fitzgerald Avenue at the lights, the pathway follows the true right of the Ōtākaro, crossing Stanmore Road and Swanns Road. Passing Richmond Community Garden and Avebury House, it crosses the river via Medway Bridge before heading deep into the red zone. New nature play features here before you reach Dallington Bridge (under construction - expected completion late spring 2025). The trail goes through native restoration plantings (Rotary Forest of Peace and Remembrance) before crossing Gayhurst Road to reach Snell Bridge and Avon Park. Pick up Te Ara Ōtākaro Avon River Trail following old roads to divert to Gayhurst Bridge. Take care crossing the road here as visibility of oncoming traffic is poor. Pass Dallington Landing following old roads to pick up the pathway again at Snell Bridge to Avon Park. More of the City to Sea will open over the next few years. In the meantime, continue along the transitional Te Ara Ōtākaro Avon River Trail for a longer walk. |
