Bowenvale Valley to Summit Road, returning via Victoria Park

A great walk with plenty of variety and sweeping views over the Canterbury Plains.

Start: The car park at the end of Bowenvale Avenue, Cashmere.

Finish: Same as starting point.

Time: 2 to 2.5 hour circuit.

Toilets: Located at Victoria Park.

Dogs: Must  be kept on a leash.

Description:

This walk starts at the end of Bowenvale Avenue where there is plenty of parking. The track starts off as a vehicle track heading up the valley - watch out for mountain bikers along this section. Further up the valley, the walking track winds its way through open tussock to the Summit Road.

From here, cross at the car park to the harbour side of the ridge then follow Cedrics Track to the Sugarloaf car park.  This is a great viewpoint looking out over the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps and across Pegasus Bay right up to the Kaikoura Mountains on a clear day.

From Sugarloaf car park, walk down the access road  for 100 metres and pick up a signposted track that passes through Thomsons Reserve and past a stone shelter. Re-cross the Summit Road at Thomsons carpark. Follow Latters Spur Track down through Victoria Park to the main carpark below the Visitor Centre. From here turn onto the Eastside Bush Track which will take you back down to Bowenvale.
