The Great Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Walk

A guided community walk the length of the Ōpāwaho Heathcote river - from springs to estuary, from bridge to bridge - featuring the ecology and history.

This is an opportunity to experience the river as a whole in one day.  We will hear stories of the many community groups who are doing conservation work along its banks.

Two sections of the walk leave the river briefly but 90 per cent of the way we are next to it. It is a long walk so participants need to wear suitable sturdy footwear; and bring sunscreen, sunhat, clothing for all weathers, and adequate food and water.

There will be a 30-minute lunch break and other shorter rest stops along the way. A simple first aid kit will be carried by the leader.

The walk is only suitable for fit and seasoned walkers because of its length. Most of the route is along bus routes.
