The Britomart Monument, at Greens Point Akaroa, was unveiled in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's jubilee. It also commemorates the British demonstration of sovereignty that took place on the site in August 1840. Respected historian Dr John Wilson will lead a visit to the site, following an illustrated talk at The Gaiety, during which he will examine the meaning of the memorial to us today.

Although The Gaiety is an accessible venue the Britomart Monument is not. Access to the monument at Greens Point is by a set of steps and the ground is uneven. Attendance at the talk at The Gaiety, without the site visit to the monument, is an option for participants who might have difficulty accessing the Britomart reserve.

  • Illustrated talk: 2pm to 3.15pm at The Gaiety
  • Fieldtrip: 3.15pm to 4.30pm at the Britomart Monument, Greens Point, Beach Road, Akaroa
