Talking Shop: The Archaeology of 19th Century Retail Culture

Hear archaeologist Jessie Garland present an archaeological perspective on 19th-century shops and shopkeepers.

The talk will be given in conjunction with the Walter Sheppard exhibition and will delve into what archaeology tells us about 19th-century culture.

A collaboration between Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, Underground Overground Archaeology and the Christchurch Archaeology Project, the Storekeeper and Suffragent exhibition tells Walter Sheppard's story through historical and archaeological evidence and showcases artefacts from his 1865 to 1875 shop, Sheppard and Co., from alcohol bottles and clay tobacco pipes to pickle jars, glass tumblers and ceramic transfer wares.
