Explore our city's urban biodiversity with iNaturalist superstar Jon Sullivan on a guided walk from the Sign of the Takahe to Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
With Jon we’ll find all manner of interesting species that share our city with us. Jon is interested in weeds, the native plants they compete with and the insects that eat them. He is also interested in documenting how nature is changing in NZ in response to changing land use, species invasions, and climate change. To do this, Jon obsessively makes thousands of nature observations every week - and is fast approaching 60,000 observations!
You can either;
Spend the whole day walking to the gardens (7km), or finish at the halfway point at South Library (currently closed) (3 km 9:45 am–1:00 pm). Or you could join Jon at the Art Gallery at 4pm for the last section walking into the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. (850 m)
We suggest you park your car at your planned finish point and take the bus up to the Takahe meeting point.
Take the number 1 Cashmere/Rangiora bus(external link)(external link) to this historic tearooms - Sign of the Takahe - meet at 9.45am at bus stop number 23476.
Walk back to the city centre, making observations along the way, led by INaturalist NZ guru Jon Sullivan, Senior Lecturer Department of Pest-Management and Conservation at Lincoln University. The full walk is approximately 7 km.
City Nature Challenge is an annual bioblitz-style competition with cities around the world in a friendly contest to see who can make the most observations of nature.
You have until Monday May 10 to upload your photos into iNaturalist to make your observations count in the challenge final totals.
Keep track of how we are going(external link)(external link).
