Sets in the City

Some of the country’s top tennis talent will compete in Tennis Canterbury’s Festival of Tennis in November.

The inaugural “Sets in the City” club tennis challenge at Wilding Park starts on Thursday 5 November.

Clubs throughout the country have nominated their top male and female players to play off each week for $1000 prize money over eight Thursday nights in November and February.  The winners are challenged the following week by other club representatives.

The first challenge (November 5) will see locals Reece Falck representing Burwood take on Jamie Garbett of Elmwood. The winner then meets New Zealand No 2 singles player Ajeet Rai, of Wellington’s Khandallah club, the following week.

In the first women’s challenge Abby Mason of Elmwood will play Petra Belsova, representing Te Kura Hagley. The winner is likely to meet recent ITF (International Tennis Federation) winner Jade Otway of Tasman.

Seating has been installed at Wilding Park for the eight week competition on Thursday evenings, starting at 6pm. The café/bar will be open for spectators and live music will feature throughout the evening.
