Rising Stars audiences first met pianist Leo Yang, aged 12. Two years on, he continues to dazzle with intuitive, expressive playing.

Fourteen-year-old Leo Yang, a Year 9 student at St Andrew’s College, began piano studies at age five with Yi Sun and currently also studies with Lixin Zhang, dazzling audiences with his intuitive and expressive playing.

He has performed at the 2020 Piano Phasing Festival and represented his school at the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival for three consecutive years, earning the 2022 “Most Promising Performer Under 18” award at the Christchurch Competitions Society Instrumental Competition.

A versatile talent, Leo also plays the trumpet, leads on the football field, and represented his school in ISSA Athletics. His ensemble captured the Adjudicator’s Award at the 2025 NZ Chamber Music Contest in their first year of competition.

This recital marks Leo’s triumphant return to the Christchurch Arts Centre stage, following his spectacular “Rising Stars” debut at age 12, promising another unforgettable performance by this young musical sensation.

This event is part of the Rising Stars 2026 programme(external link). A Tuesday lunchtimes concert series that focuses on encouraging, nurturing and providing a performance platform for emerging young musicians.
