Richmond Joins Christchurch - 1890

Join us for an open day at Avebury House and find out about some local Richmond history.

Come and visit Avebury House, learn about its history and see our display which focuses on Richmond becoming part of the City of Christchurch.

In 1889, nearly 200 Richmond residents signed a petition to join the City of Christchurch. The petition was organised by three local men: David Cochrane, Walter Langford and Joseph Broadley, and was presented to the Governor in early 1890.

The petitioners' wish was granted and the new enlarged city boundaries were gazetted in May 1890 -  the first extension of the city beyond the existing boundaries of the four town belts.

See a copy of the petition from Archives NZ and other material about the people who organised the petition and some of those who signed.

We will also host a Devonshire tea, koha/donation.
