With the iNaturalist app and expert guidance, let's explore, record, and celebrate the biodiversity in this amazing landscape together! These areas are a diverse complex of salt marsh, mudflats, salt meadow, coastal bush and freshwater wetland areas at the mouth of the Ōtakaro Avon River. The estuary and associated wetlands host one of the highest densities of waterbirds in New Zealand. Over 100 species and up to 32,000 individuals have been recorded.
Wear weather-appropriate clothing, a good pair of walking shoes and a smartphone with the iNaturalist app downloaded.
