19th Century Women Confronting the Lens

Captured in Wanganui between 1859 and 1889, William Harding’s portraits offer a rare visual record of NZ women during a period of profound social change.

In the heart of Kate Sheppard’s former home and hub of the suffrage campaign, this exhibition presents one of the few visual records which so vividly captures the presence and diversity of women in Aotearoa New Zealand during the suffrage movement.

Wanganui photographer, William Harding's work documents, not only the physical likenesses of his sitters, but also offer a compelling and unfiltered reflection of evolving presence of women in a society on the cusp of change.

Please note: Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House is open from Thursday to Sunday.

Limited parking is available on the street. Please, allow time for parking and contact us prior to arriving if you require accessible parking.
