Packe Street Park and Community Garden

Visit our open garden and chat with staff onsite for kōrero and guidance during the Heritage Festival.

Come along and visit this community garden and learn about its history and purpose from the people involved.

Explore this characterful community green space brought into being by locals nearly 30 years ago. Our park and gardens stand as a living and evolving monument to the power and persistence of future-thinking, green-centred, passionate people. We don gloves, 'barrow mulch, plants natives, experiment with vegetables, care for fruit trees, banter, and create art, occasions, and connections. This community asset is yours to enjoy and help to flourish so come along and see how we're growing together.

Our small garden wonderland was a pioneer of community green space in Ōtautahi around 30 years ago. It stands as a living green monument to the power and persistence of a thoughtful, future-thinking, and passionate community group.

An old walnut tree presides over our site, a thickset native broom specimen lovingly lurks on the sidelines, and old pear and apple trees still hold centre stage as remnants from the backyards of former houses that used to occupy this site.

We are kaitiaki of numerous natives, fruit trees, vegetable plots, and various flowers and herbs. We work alongside the Council who maintain the open grassy spaces and swing set and there is a picnic table and bench for visitors to sit and ponder their surrounds.

Partial wheelchair accessibility.
