Old Meets New - Inner City East to the River

Walking Festival: Discover the history, culture, and transformation of Inner City East and Linwood West, from early settlement to post-quake redevelopment.

Intermediate fitness required.

Grade: Intermediate.

Distance 2.5 km.

Starting at Te Whare Roimata, the route takes in landmarks like The Bricks, Tautahi's Pa, the Avon Loop Cottage, and Englefield Lodge, alongside charming streets, historic cottages, and gardens.  hear about the area's significance to Mana Whenua, its heritage housing, and the role it played in early European settlement.  Learn about the neighbourhood's transformation post-quake, stories of community activism, and the challenges of redevelopment.  Finish with food and drink at Little Pomeroys or relax by the Avon River.

Participants and their dependants (children must be supervised) must take full responsibility for their safety, health and equipment while navigating varied terrain, across public and private routes, wearing sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing and carrying essential supplies, including water, food and sun protection.
