Kite Day 2026

Come fly with us at New Brighton Beach! Grab your kite, pack a picnic and get ready for a fun day in the sun.

Round up your kites for Kite Day 2026! A busy, colourful and creative display of sky-high creatures, cartoons and shapes for all ages to enjoy.

Bring your friends and whānau along for some kite-flying fun or watch the experts show their skills and impressive collections as they fly large groups of kites all at once.

It’s also the perfect opportunity for beach activities like swimming, sandcastle building and picnicking.

To make a day of it, check out the many local eateries and shops in New Brighton.

Remember to be SunSmart – slip, slop, slap and wrap.

Let’s leave the beach cleaner than we found it. Please take all your belongings and rubbish away with you, and for safety reasons don’t bring glass. Please leave your dogs at home.

  • Consider taking the bus – via the Rolleston/New Brighton (#5), Hillmorton/Southshore (#60) or The Palms/New Brighton (#135) Metro(external link)
  • Ride your bike – a bike parking station will be located at the grassed area directly adjacent to the south ramp and basketball court. Staff will be posted there during the event.
  • Carpool by car – the North Ramp car park will be open, and on-street parking is available by the beach and township. The South Ramp car park is closed to cars, except those displaying a mobility pass, for the event.
  • Mobility parking – vehicles displaying a mobility pass can park in the South Ramp car park (near the basketball court and war memorial). If all the mobility parks are occupied, please try the North Ramp car park.
