Evening adventures - City Nature Challenge
Come meet the scientists behind the iNaturalistNZ App and explore our night-time nature, recording what we find for the City Nature Challenge.
Did you know that many of New Zealand's most unique wildlife are nocturnal? Find out more at this evening exploration extravaganza, where scientists and experts converge on the Climate Action Campus and the surrounding red zone lands to uncover what lives here. Bring your torch, warm clothes and a camp chair for hanging out.
- Throughout the evening entomologists will be exploring the gardens and surroundings to discover what lives here hidden in plain sight
- We will have light traps set up to catch night flyers
- Roamimg iNat experts will be on hand to help you upload and ID your observations.
- Our Council Libraries' outreach van will have lots of books and big games to play
- There will be a coffee van and sausage sizzle to warm you up.
- Green Lab will be running rock painting activities
- At 7pm we will head off on a spotlight walk to meet educator Jenny on the river to see if she caught any fish or tuna. Get up close and personal with these cryptic creatures.
- Find out what lives in your soil at home with Dr Frank Ashwood. Dig a 20x20x20cm cube of soil from your garden – try to keep it intact and bring it along in a plastic bag labelled with the address & location.
- At 4.30pm take tour of the butterfly gardens with Climate Action Campus kaiako
- Ant enthusiast Patrick Rayen will be feeding his ants - Nylanderia sp(Parrot ants) at 4:45PM, Pheidole sp (Big headed ants) 5:45PM, Iridomyrmex suchieri(Suchier's meat ant) at 6:30PM, Technomyrmex jocosus (White footed house ant) at 7:25PM, Unknown species (possibly a new species) at 8:00PM.
- White Room Creative Spaces will be hosting life drawing sessions with what we find
- Take part in an iNaturalist scavenger hunt – find six things and go into the draw to win a prize!
