Arts Canterbury is set to launch a brand-new event this spring with the inaugural Art Play Day, a celebration of creativity, connection, and community. This event has been planned as a hands-on, interactive experience, and a chance for visitors to connect with artists ahead of the Arts Canterbury Open Studios event in November. People of all ages are invited to explore the joy and wellbeing that comes from making art.
The event will take place at the Climate Action Campus in Christchurch – a space that already hums with colour and creativity. The campus is home to dozens of murals created by local and visiting artists, making it a natural setting for a day dedicated to artistic expression. The Climate Action Campus is the perfect backdrop for an event that showcases the value of creativity in everyday life and many of the on-campus groups such as E5 Art and Clay will have their doors open on the day, inviting visitors to have a look around or to join an activity.
Art Play Day will feature live demonstrations, “have-a-go” art sessions, and collaborative projects where the public can get involved alongside local artists. From children and families to older adults, the event promises something for everyone, fostering creativity, wellness, and connection across generations.
Arts Canterbury Chair Mandy Palmer says the day is about making art accessible to all.
“We want Art Play Day to be a free event where people can simply come along, pick up a brush or a piece of clay, and discover what creativity can bring to their lives. It’s also a chance for the public to meet local artists and be part of Canterbury’s vibrant arts community.”
The organisation hopes that Art Play Day will become an annual highlight on the Arts Canterbury calendar, growing into a celebration that connects people with both the arts and the wider community.
