Our renowned National Concerto Competition is an amazing ride for a group of New Zealand’s best young pianist's and it takes place every year in Christchurch.  This year we have 29 contestants competing for the six semi-finalist spots and then ultimately to become one of the three finalists for March 2023.

The preliminaries begin on Tuesday 6 December going through to Wednesday 7 December (morning only) and an announcement at 2.45 p.m. of who the semi-finalists will be. This is a very exciting time for these contestants as they strive to win a place as a finalist. 

Works performed in the preliminaries include well-known concertos by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt, but also feature compositions by Medtner, Franck and Moszkowski. 

The adjudicators for the competition are:

  • Professor Terence Dennis - Co-ordinator of Classical Music Performance, School of Performing Arts, University of Otago
  • Glenn Riddle - Lecturer in Keyboard at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne
