The section of Gloucester St between Colombo St and Oxford Tce will be permanently closed from Friday to allow initial work to begin on the Christchurch Convention Centre site.
The Convention Centre Precinct, which will include hospitality and retail businesses as well as the Convention Centre, will be on the expanded city block bordered by Worcester St, Oxford Tce, Armagh St and Colombo St
Ōtākaro Chief Executive Albert Brantley said a lot of early site work needed to be done to prepare the area for construction.
“That preparation work begins with the removal of infrastructure that has serviced this section of Gloucester St – including electricity, water and stormwater services– before preliminary site preparation begins in about two months’ time,” Mr Brantley said.
“The bulk excavation for foundations are expected to commence at the end of this year or very early in 2017.”
The Convention Centre is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
