Check out some of the events on in Christchurch over the weekend.

Le Race

Cyclists will start Le Race from Cathedral Square.

The annual Christchurch to Akaroa cycle race – Le Race - is on this weekend. 

The 100km race starts from Cathedral Square at 8am on Saturday and will see cyclists racing up Dyers Pass Road and along the Summit Road to Gebbies Pass. They will then follow State Highway 75 to Little River and the Hilltop Tavern, before veering left to take the Summit Road to Akaroa. 

The fastest riders are expected to arrive in Akaroa about 10.40am, with the last of the competitors expected in the township by 2pm.  Drivers heading to Banks Peninsula  on Saturday should expect some delays.

Open Air Cinema

Enjoy a movie under the stars at the American Express Open Air Cinema in Rauora Park (corner Lichfield and Madras streets).

This weekend’s line-up of movies begins with Murder on the Orient Express tonight, Coco tomorrow night, and Wonder on Sunday night.  The gates open at 6pm but the movies won’t start till the sun sets.  Capacity is limited so book ahead online at openaircinemas.co.nz. Tickets are $15 per person.

Jump for Cancer

Some of the country’s best show jumpers will be demonstrating their equestrian skills at the Jump for Cancer  charity event in North Hagley Park on Sunday afternoon.

The jumping starts at midday and entry to the general admission viewing area on either side of the course is free. Food vendors will be on site offering everything from coffee and gelato to gourmet potatoes and pizza.

Grab your picnic chairs and rugs and make an afternoon of it. All money raised during the event will go to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Big Bargain Book Sale

Stock up on reading material for the cooler months ahead at the Christchurch City Libraries Big Bargain Book Sale.  More than 50,000 books, magazines, DVDs and CDs will be available for people to buy.

The Arts Centre's Easter Market is on this weekend - rain or shine.

Most adult books will be priced at $3 while young adult and children’s books will be priced at $1. Audio-visual items will be on sale for $3 while magazines will be offered at 10 for $1. The sale is on at  the Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre today from 9am to 7pm and on Saturday from 9am to 4pm.

QEII Park Open Day

Help shape the future of QEII Park by coming along to an open day at the park between midday and 3pm on Sunday. Christchurch City Council is working on developing a master plan for the park and wants to hear the community's views on what should happen at the park.

The open day will include a guided walk around the site, activities for children and a free sausage sizzle. See the Facebook page for updates and more information.

Arts Centre market

The Arts Centre is hosting an Easter market  on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Come along and buy hand-crafted products from some of the city's best independent designers and artists, sample some delicious food, and enjoy live entertainment.
