The company has been awarded the contract to build the communal hub building where the sports codes will be able to gather together for meetings and social events. It will have a mix of community rooms and flexible spaces.

Hawkins 2017 Ltd will also build the sports hub’s shared changing room facilities, the covered seating for the rugby league grounds and the control building from which athletic events will be run.

They will be the working alongside the earthworks contractor, Rooney Earthmoving Ltd, the athletics track contractor, Polytan NZ Ltd, and the civil works contractor, HEB Construction Ltd.

HEB Construction Ltd has the job of putting in the roading, car parks, underground services, landscaping, and other infrastructure needed to support the sports hub.

HEB Construction is also coordinating and managing the construction of all the playing surfaces, apart from the international athletics track, which is being constructed by Polytan.

The project team have been working on site since March last year and are aiming to have the first sporting facilities ready by the middle of this year.

“It’s great to have Hawkins 2017 Ltd on board as the contractor for the building works,’’ says Christchurch City Council Project Director Scott Bennett.

“By the end of this month we’ll have the full complement of contractors working on site so over the next few months we expect to see a huge amount of progress on the sports hub. It is going to be really exciting to see it take shape,’’ Mr Bennett says.

The Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub is a long-term project that combines the regional and community facilities for four sports – athletics, tennis, hockey and rugby league – on a 32-hectare section of Ngā Puna Wai reserve in southwest Christchurch.

The athletics track and hockey turfs will be the first of the planned facilities to open, followed by the outdoor tennis courts, community playing fields, and the rugby league fields.
