Three vibrant art works have been short-listed to brighten the wall of the Ibis Hotel on Hereford Street.

The eye-catching works were designed by local artists based on ideas put forward by the public.

This artwork by Brandon Warrell is designed to show the beauty of New Zealand's flora and fauna.

Now the public is being asked to choose which one they like best.

The artwork that receives the most public support will be recreated on the wall of the central city hotel as part of Christchurch City Council’s Enliven Places Programme.

“Last month we asked the public for ideas about what they would like to see on the wall and they came up with some great ideas,’’ says Council Head of Urban Design, Regeneration and Heritage Carolyn Ingles.

“From those ideas we identified some common themes which some local artists have used to inspire some really colourful and striking works of art.

“We’ve narrowed the choice down to three and we’re asking the public to pick which one they like best,’’ Ms Ingles says.

This artwork features the word Breathe.

This artwork by Kyla Kuzniarski and Paul Walters is designed to inspire us to make time for what helps us breathe.

Facebook posts showing the three designs will appear on the Council’s Facebook page over the coming days. The design which attracts the most public support, judged by the number of likes it receives, will be declared the winner.

The hotel wall will be painted with the winning art work during the first week of December.

Enliven Places aims to encourage people to visit the central city by creating an attractive, interesting and welcoming environment. It also welcomes people to play a part in defining and delivering local place-making initiatives that contribute to Christchurch’s unique identity.

The third design, by Joel Hart, takes inspiration from the people of Christchurch working to reshape and rebuild their city.
