During a week-long residential programme, the National Youth Orchestra is involved in rehearsals and intensive tutorials with members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO), culminating in special concerts in two New Zealand cities.

The programme includes Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, the most successful of the four versions he wrote for his only opera Fidelio. The work itself provides a musical summary of the entire opera.

The National Youth Orchestra is joined by cellist Matthias Balzat (winner of the 2017 National Concerto Competition) to perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, one of the central pillars of the cello repertoire. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 is a cheerful, lyrical work, inspired by the Bohemian music much loved by Dvořák.
