Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision and Heritage New Zealand present three programmes, compiled from historic film footage and audio recordings, with each exploring a different aspect of more than a century of cycling in Christchurch and around the world.

Showing times

  • 10am: A Cinematic Century of Bicycling – from rough roads to women’s liberation, this is cycling in the 20th century and features cycling round Canterbury.
  • 11am: Round the Gorges Race (1939) – This film follows competitors on a 100-mile cycle road race through Glentui, Ashley and Waimakariri Gorges in 1939. Presented with permission from the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club.
  • 1pm: Cycling Safety – how to take care of your bicycle and how to take care on the road. We explore the changing advice given to cyclists through our film and television collections. 
  • 2pm: Repeat Showing of A Cinematic Century of Bicycling – from rough roads to women’s liberation, this is cycling in the 20th century and features cycling round Canterbury.
