Ecological monitoring by the Christchurch City Council.
Water quality monitoring in the estuary is predominantly undertaken by Environment Canterbury. The Christchurch City Council has also recently instigated monitoring at four sites within coastal areas of Christchurch and Banks Peninsula.
The Council has carried out a number of ecological investigations in the past, including fish, cockle and seaweed surveys. Monitoring of sediment, macroalgae and benthic invertebrates in the estuary has also been undertaken annually in March/April since 2007, as part of the Healthy Estuary and River of the City joint monitoring program with Environment Canterbury. This data is collated and reported by Environment Canterbury and these reports can be found on their website.
