Walking

Christchurch has many wonderful natural places to walk around and explore. Join a free walking group and get fit while meeting new people at the same time.

Recreation and Sports Sunday Walk

All walks are free so come along with a friend or come alone and meet some new people.

The Sunday walk meets Sundays at 10.30am and walks for approximately one hour on the flat.

30 minute Walk n Talk programmes

The Walk n Talk programme meets several times a week in different locations and walks for approximately 30 minutes on the flat. Walks are led by an experienced leader and are an excellent choice for people starting to become more active. Newcomers are welcome so make a fresh start and discover some hidden gems in your local community.

Other walking groups

There are over 90 walking groups in Christchurch and surrounding areas. To find out more go to Active Canterbury search.

Here you'll find information and contact details about walking groups in the location you choose.

Alternatively, the Walking Groups Booklet [402KB]lists the days that various walking groups meet in greater Christchurch. It provides a brief description of the groups' activities as well as contact information. You can also pick up a copy of the brochure from the Christchurch City Council service centres and libraries.

Some helpful tips on walking

Check out Starting out walking: some helpful tips page at Active Canterbury.

It's a good idea to bring a drink, wear a sensible pair of well cushioned shoes, wear a hat and apply sunscreen.

Walks are only cancelled in heavy or persistent rain. Listen to Newstalk ZB for details.
